The king’s ranger is currently a series of 3 books but more are coming. Book 1 is where it all begins. Mr. Cobble has got the art of drip feeding the suspense down really well. There is not a dull scene in the book. Plenty of dark creatures and a whole lot of mystery which starts with a sort of routine hunt for Rew, our hero.
The mystery deepens as the books progress though some answers do come in book 2 and book 3.
By the way, if you are thinking that you will learn what the investiture is, then forget it. It is not going to happen
I can say much about the systems of governance depicted in the books and how the local population is exploited but that is true across the board and is hard reality outside the pages of Mr. Cobble’s universe.
The tension builds and I am glad Anne is around to give Rew some perspective. The conflict is nicely done and there are many twists. Rew knows an astonishing amount of stuff and there have been times I have wished that he would just handover his knowledge but with knowledge comes responsibility specially if you are dealing with magic etc.
There are some talking animals, a kidnapping with a sort of happy ending and even some sword play.
The weather plays such a huge role and the nice thing about this adventure that it is constrained by natures. The characters are magicians but their magic is limited and is no use for keeping out the rain and sometimes, they can’t even light a fire.
A rather humorist twist is Rew’s cousin Alsayer; not that the man has much to reccomend him but I rather enjoy Rew’s reaction to the man. I guess I can relate.
Do read all 3 books in sequence otherwise you will be lost.
I am eagerly waiting for the next book.
